You're A Busy Body & A Lackey To Budding Dictators In Nigeria -Jonathan Hits Back At Ex-US Ambassador Over Attack On His Wife

Former President Goodluck Jonathan has berated a former United States of America ambassador to Nigeria, John Campbell, for criticising his wife and questioning her source of wealth.

Campbell had written a widely circulated opinion piece on the Jonathan's government on the website of the Council on Foreign Relations’ published on Friday, October 6.

The ex-diplomat also suggested that the House of Representatives was been tele-guided by Mrs Jonathan, because the lower house is dominated by Christians.

Responding to the claims in the article, an aide to Jonathan, Reno Omokri, described the former diplomat as a busy body and a lackey to budding dictators in Nigeria.

In a rebuttal published on his Facebook page on Sunday, October 8, Omokri alleged that Campbell was trying to divert the public from the monumental $26 billion corruption scam recently uncovered in the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC).

“It is most unfortunate that the former US ambassador to Nigeria, John Campbell, who is now a consultant to certain Nigerians and a self confessed admirer of President Muhammadu Buhari, would again insult Nigerians with his procured opinions meant to divert the public from the monumental $26 billion corruption scam recently uncovered in the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation of which President Muhammadu Buhari is the supervising minister.

“This time, Ambassador Campbell has taken on the Body of Christ and former First Lady, Dame Patience Jonathan.

“According to Ambassador Campbell, Southern Christians are opposed to President Muhammadu Buhari's anti corruption war because they were benefiting from the Goodluck Jonathan administration,” Omokri wrote.

Omokri picked holes in the claims by Ambassador Campbell that PDP lawmakers in the House of Representatives are the ones influencing the lower house to summon the boss of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ibrahim Magu over Mrs Jonathan's alleged corrupt practices.

Omokri also faulted Campbell's opinion that Christians dominate Muslims in the House of Representatives, adding that Christians should not be made a scapegoat as consultant John Campbell seeks to do.

He continued: “Ambassador John Campbell, who has become a busybody in other people's affairs, sunk to a new low of insulting the former First Lady, Dame Patience Jonathan, describing her as "as being arrogant and flamboyant".

“Ambassador Campbell should be informed that while it is the custom of his clients to consign women to "the other room", President Jonathan had no such inclination and has the proud distinction of being the first and only Nigerian leader to have reserved 35% of all appointive positions at the federal level to women.

“If Ambassador Campbell's busybody-ness cannot be contained, then I advise him to get busy writing about the $26 billion NNPC, monumental fraud, the former SGF, Babachir Lawal's grass cutter scandal and the indicted transport minister, Rotimi Amaechi, who admitted to spending $1 million on a one day dinner for Professor Wole Soyinka.”

Campbell, 74, is known for hobnobbing with the Nigerian elite. He sits on the board of American University of Nigeria (AUN).

AUN is a private university in Adamawa state that offers American style higher education programs at the undergraduate, graduate and professional levels. It was founded in 2004 by Nigeria's former vice president, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar.

Interestingly, Atiku has also been accused of corruption by several individuals and groups, but Campbell has refrained from the writing on the topic.

Six months ago, Campbell described Nigeria's former Minister of Petroleum, Diezani Alison-Madueke as arrogant, greedy, and vain.
