An 20-year-old woman has detailed the terrifying moment she ran for cover after a bomb exploded at an Ariana Grande concert in Manchester – killing at least 22 people and injuring 59.

Erin McDougle, from Newcastle in the UK, told 9News she was about to leave the Manchester Arena, which has a 21,000-seat venue, when she and a friend heard the 'massive bomb.'

'It was just very, very scary to hear a massive bomb go off in such a crowded venue, is like nothing I've ever experienced before in my life. Just very scary and I'm still pretty shook by it all.'

Ms McDougle, who is from Newcastle in the UK, said she was about to leave the Manchester Arena, which has a 21,000-seat venue, when she and a friend heard the 'massive bomb' (pictured are two women wrapped in thermal blankets after the explosion)

This distressing picture purportedly shows the inside of the arena after the suicide attack at the Ariana Grande concert - its veracity has been confirmed by the two witness.

A suspected suicide bomber is believed to have targeted the pop concert held at Manchester Arena last night.

A nail bomb reportedly ripped through concert-goers after detonating in the foyer area of the arena as the show ended and revellers began to leave.

Video footage has shown young concert-goers jumping over seats and each other while trying to escape, leading to a stampede.

The incident is being treated as a terror attack, Greater Manchester Police Chief Constable Ian Hopkins has confirmed.

Ms McDougle said she and a friend were heading to an exit on the other side of the venue when they heard the explosion.

'We were just getting up to leave, but not at the exit where the bomb went off,' she told 9News.

Crowds panic after 'loud bang' at Ariana Grande show, Manchester.

'However, when it went off everybody just started running and sprinting in the opposite direction, so that made everybody around me sprint towards the nearest exit. It was just hectic.'

'I didn't know where to go. I was so scared that the stairwell that we went on was going to go up or be affected somehow.'

'Like you don't know who is in the crowd or what has been, I don't know, rigged or anything, so it was all just very scary and I just grabbed on to my friend's hand and tried to get out the best we could.'

A child was spotted clutching a balloon while wrapped in a foil wrap following the terror attack at the Manchester Arena.

Although she had initially thought the loud bang was a piece of stage equipment falling, Ms McDougle said it became clear it was a bomb by the reaction of other concert-goers.

'The reaction from everyone else made it seem like a bomb, like minutes later it was pretty certain and everybody just was screaming. So, it was kind of obvious pretty much straightaway.'

Ms McDougle said many people are still missing and children are taking refuge at hotels and travel lodges.

The Prime Minister's office confirmed on Tuesday it is trying to establish if any Australians were injured in the blast.

Bloodied concertgoers were pictured being helped by armed police outside the arena after explosions rang out at the gig. A woman spotted being helped by emergency services.
