Lawmakers Finally End Years Of Secrecy To Publish National Assembly Budget

The leadership of Nigeria's National Assembly has decided to publish the budget of the federal legislature after several years of lawmakers keeping the annual document a secret.

The report says the lawmakers reached the decision at the meeting of the joint leadership of the Nigerian Senate and the House of Representatives.

The meeting, which was held at the Maitama-Abuja residence of Senate President Bukola Saraki, began late on Monday, May 8 and ended just after midnight.

Saraki and Dogara headed the meeting where the lawmakers agreed to publish National Assembly budget

The lawmakers will now lay the proposed 2017 budget of the National Assembly in both Houses today, Tuesday, May 9 during plenary.

A source said: “It is now certain. The budget of the National Assembly will be laid this morning, the leaders of the National Assembly, Senate and the House of Representatives have decided. The Speaker was also here.”

PremiumTimes gathered that just some days ago, chairman of the National Assembly Saraki assured that the federal legislature's budget would be laid alongside the 2017 Appropriations Bill.

“The line by line of the National Assembly budget, part of the #Opnenass, is a done deal. (it) will be laid with 2017 budget,” Saraki tweeted.

In 2016, the total sum of the budget was N115 billion. Nigerians will find the total of this year’s budget probably when the bill is laid today.
